Friday Faces
She's oft-named the 'World's Sexiest Woman,' but you're more likely to find her at a refugee camp than the red carpet. Angelina Jolie isn't a celebrity toting philanthropy as an accessory--her humanitarian causes are the soul of her life's work. She's been a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees since 2001, and has visited some of the world's most crisis-stricken places. In 2003, she and beau Brad Pitt launched the Jolie-Pitt Foundation that brings aid and awareness to humanitarian situations worldwide.
Her latest mission? Pointing mainstream media awareness to the Bosnian War. Her directorial debut of In the Land of Blood and Honey is vaunted for its portrayal of the war's effect on women. And the film's plot is anything but a glossed over love story. Jolie illuminates a harrowing topic by way of an empathy-driven story line. You won't leave the theater sobbing as much as wanting to catch a flight to Bosnia and Herzegovina to help with the healing efforts still going on today.
So whenever you take a rightful beauty cue from tabloids' most sought-after subjects, remember to check up on her current causes. We're excited to see what Angelina brings to our theaters and consciences next.
